Gullett’s Animals Looking For Summer Homes!

The time has come to start thinking about holiday homes for members of our Gullett animal family for the summer months (6/5 until 8/25).
Below you will find a list of critters that are available. In the past, we’ve had families take sole responsibility for an animal for the entire summer as well as divide the time and responsibilities for an animal between multiple families. You decide what works best for you and your family!

Leopard geckos/ “Limon” and “Gizmo” (2 in one tank)

Malaysian gecko/ “Waldo”
Crested gecko/ “Clementine”
Basilisks/ “Harry” and “Hermione” (2 in one tank- these will be moved to a smaller tank for take home purposes.)
Tarantula/ “Rose”
Tarantula
3 Box Turtles (All 3 need to remain together – best outdoors/ email me to discuss enclosure options)

Red-bellied newts (2 in one water tank)

“Coco” the guinea pig – (Split with another family, needing a home July 8 – Aug. 25th)
“Tina” the Tortoise (would do well in enclosed backyard without dogs/ loves to eat grass without pesticides, she will mow for you ;)
Corn snake/ “Corny”
“Peanut” and “Wilbur” guinea pigs (2 in one habitat, must stay together)

Please contact me if you have any questions on the care, time involved and logistics.  When you sign up, we’ll arrange a short orientation and schedule a time for pick up. Thank you so much for your continued animal support, interest and enthusiasm!

Warmly,
Heather

UPDATE ON HB 5 (High school curriculum, testing and accountability)

It was a long day for those of us waiting for HB5 to be heard on the Senate floor. From 10am on, the Governor and Lieutenant Governor’s staffs held meetings trying to convince Senators to accept amendments including those to add back EOCs in Algebra 2 and English 3. Prior to the meeting, TAMSA had spoken with all Senators and all but a couple would commit to sticking to the 5 EOCs outlined in HB5.

The meeting recessed between 12:00 and 12:30 and the Lt. Gov announced that HB5 would be heard, voted on, and likely passed at 2pm. That time came and went and after 3pm, he announced that some members felt they needed more time to read the bill. He said he intends to bring up HB5 on Monday and vote it out.

NEEDED ACTION:

REGARDLESS OF THE DELAY TODAY: YOUR CALLS ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

IT IS CRITICAL THAT WE KEEP THE PRESSURE ON THE SENATORS TO BRING HB 5 TO THE SENATE FLOOR ON MONDAY AND VOTE TO SUPPORT IT WITH NO MORE THAN 5 EOCs.

BOTH DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS NEED TO HEAR FROM THEIR CONSTITUENTS BEFORE THE SENATE RESUMES ON MONDAY AT 10AM. Email over the weekend, and CALL on Monday between 8-10 a.m.

ONCE YOU HAVE CONTACTED YOUR SENATOR, PLEASE CALL LT. GOV. DEWHURST AND GOV. PERRY WITH THE SAME MESSAGE. PASS HB5 WITH NO MORE THAN 5 EOCs.

Tell your friends and family to EMAIL now and CALL on Monday first thing.

Find your Senator:http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/Home.aspx

Popcorn Help Needed
Did you know that the reason we sell popcorn every Friday after school is to make money for the remodeling of the kindergarten/life skills ramp?  We have already laid some of the groundwork, and still to come will be aviary, more life skills equipment, kindergarten sized handicapped accessible tables and chairs, and an amphitheater!
A huge thank you to Peggy Dieterich, who has dedicated many hours to making and selling popcorn, and has raised over $2000 for the project!
Peggy will no longer be able to make popcorn on Fridays, but will still be able to help sell, clean up, and count money.  Please contact Laura DiCarlo at lhdicarlo@yahoo.com or 529-1701 if you can come to Gullett anytime between 1 and 1:30pm on a Friday or two before the end of the school year to help make popcorn.
We are also looking for a person to co-lead making popcorn on Fridays next year.  Thanks!

Tuesday - Meet at the picnic tables by the  first grade portables  right after school until 3:15 for a green craft.  Parents should come with the kids.
Wednesday - Walk and Roll to School Day
If you live too far for your child to walk to Gullett,  park your car by 7:20am  in the NW Pony fields parking lot (off of Shoal Creek on North Park just south of Treadwell) and your kids can walk the rest of the way to school in a walking train.  The train will depart the pony fields at 7:25am.  Led by parent volunteers Nancy and Sarah Edwards.
If you live south of 2222 and want to bike in a train, meet at the south east corner of 2222 at 7:20am for a 7:25am departure. Led by parent volunteers Julia Mickenberg and Andrea Maher.
Thursday - zero waste lunch day so use reusable, recyclable, or composting packaging when making lunch.
Friday - Buy a reusable grocery sack from Ms. Greer’s class during after school popcorn and water sales. Bags will also be available at the art show as well.  After you buy your bag meet at the 1st grade portable picnic tables to make a jellyfish craft using water bottles.
Thanks to the volunteers who came out for our bike rodeo last Sunday led by the Ghisallo Foundation.  The Ernst family made bike license plates with kids, Marcy Shapiro and Lynn Tinney signed folks in, and community volunteer Tom Linehan set up and cleaned up.  Thanks to Janie Ruiz for her help and support as well.
___________________________________________________________________
Thanks to all who brought old electronics to Gullett Saturday morning for recycling.  We had a great turn out and hopefully made some money for the school while being good to the earth!
Special thanks to Gullett alum Jack Parker who helped the entire time, and to Steven Zettner for volunteering to help.
______________________________________________________________
Thanks to Shawn & Kiersten Dube, Richard Crowles,  Emily Rowe, Christy Bell, Cathy Savage, and the 14 McCallum students who helped with the Gecko Gala childcare.  Sorry the child care was a little crazier this year because of the outdoor venue, but  the volunteers did an amazing job trying to create order out of the chaos!  Special thanks to parent Emily Roe who saved the day in true teacher style when she led an impromptu game of Red Light Green Light when we needed an activity! :)

The cool thing is that Gullett gets a cut of the proceeds on items worth anything when recycled.  All electronics securely wiped in the process, so bring in your old equipment and make room for all of the new stuff you’re going to bid on at the Gecko Gala! :)

Are you interested in checking out the Gecko Gala and helping too?  You can sign up for an hour to help with the child care and enjoy the rest of the evening kid free!  We are especially in need of help with crafts.  Please sign up on the Gecko Gala site or contact Laura DiCarlo if interested.  Thanks!

Can you host a Social to be auctioned?

While you’re planning your 80’s attire for the Gecko Gala this year, please consider hosting a social.  At the silent auction there will be a table with descriptions of various socials.  The people attending the auction will be able to bid on these socials and the highest bidders will get to attend.  When you decide to host a social, you may choose any theme you like.  It could be a bowling party for 8 kids or a cocktail party for 10 couples.  It could be a games night at your home, or a swim party perhaps.  You can team up with a few neighbors on your block whose kids also attend Gullett and host a progressive dinner party.  Do you have a special talent, such as baking the best cookies ever, or perhaps you just made some awesome beer in your garage and want to show it off?  A social is a perfect way.  You get to support the school by helping to raise money while you get to know people in our school community.  If you have any questions, or would like to donate a social, please contact me, Kate Hearne, at katehearne70@gmail.com.  Thank you!!
