Gullett Principal Janie Ruiz is in her fifth year as principal at Gullett, where she hit the ground running with a focus on academics. Her list of jobs and accomplishments in AISD is long. She student-taught first grade at Casis Elementary, and then was hired as a sixth grade teacher. During the next 10 years, she taught sixth, fourth and fifth grades before moving to the central office. Janie moved to central office as the gifted and talented elementary specialist then coordinator. Prior to coming to Gullett, Janie was the assistant principal for about 6 months at Davis Elementary and then became the principal at Becker Elementary School for five years.
Over the course of her career, Ms. Ruiz was a trainer for AISD for 10 years (classroom instruction, curriculum and alignment, all gifted/talented topics) and helped to write several curriculum units. She also trained outside AISD for two years in the areas of gifted/talented and curriculum/alignment.
Gullett Principal Janie Ruiz is certified in elementary education, physical education, special education, English as a second language, and gifted/talented. She has a master's degree in educational administration from Southwest Texas State University, and has completed post-master's work at Texas State and University of Texas at Austin.
Ms. Ruiz just keeps on learning. She has co-chaired the Superintendent's Task Force on Early Childhood and the Early Childhood Elementary Principals' Cluster, and is still active in district boards and committees.
When Ms. Ruiz is not working, she may be spending time with her two children. Jennifer graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with an elementary education degree and is a teacher at Reilly Elementary. Her son John is majoring in psychology at Texas State and hopes to be a child and family psychologist. Ms. Ruiz likes almost all sports (volleyball, golf and tennis are among her favorites), reading, cooking, traveling and outdoors. But most of all, she loves learning.
