A Living Experience

Teaching Garden

The mission of the native plant garden and certified wildlife habitat at Gullett Elementary School is to create and maintain a native landscape that is integrated into the school's math, language arts, science and social studies curriculum. The study of ecosystems (both indoors and out) and the planning, maintenance and care of the garden foster a sense of stewardship for the land. The project aims to educate students about the historical importance of native plants and their role in creating a sustainable future.

Gullett teachers, together with the Outdoor Classroom Committee and a parent landscape architect, designed the native habitat garden for the 4th-grade courtyard. We transformed this area into a teaching garden with a large container pond, beautiful native plants, a raised bed for handicapped access, rustic seats arranged for outdoor learning, rain barrels to aid in water conservation, a dry streambed with a stone bridge, and even a Native American crop garden. The garden is an asset the whole school can use and enjoy. If you would like to help support the garden either monetarily or with supplies or labor, please contact Pam at thepenicks@earthlink.net.

Animals

Ducks, chickens, and turkeys in the kindergarten wing; and chinchillas, a tarantula, and fish in the hallway. It sounds like a fun day at the zoo, but it's actually all about learning. Gullett is home to many animals, including our famous cat, Gully, who spends most of his days in the office. Find out how you can help with out animals by contacting Steve Neel, sneel@tpciga.org, or Maribeth Kobza Betton, Kobzabetton66@gmail.com.
